WANTED A First Grade Assistant Master. UNMARRIED under 30 years of age: Graduate: Having at least two years' experience in school work. DUTIES to teach Chinese boys (or boys of other nationalities) the usual subjects for an Elementary Education: English Grammar, Dictation Composition, Arithmetic.
SCHOOL HOURS 9-1.30 five days a week, 2.30-4 two afternoons and
9-12 Saturdays.
VACATIONS One Calendar Month, February and August.
Salary $ese annue during probetic but $1800 with Exchange Com-
pensation afterwards.
EXCHANGE COMPENSATION Nalf the salary is paid in the colony at 3 to * the dolla as a catipensation for the low rate of exchange not ruling. The gain has this year (1897) varied from one-fifth to one-third of the total pay, according to the fluctuation of the dollar from 2/11⁄2 to 1/9%.
LEAVE at the end of six years; each Master is entitled to twelvemonths leave, of which the first two months and the vacation months February and August are at FULL Pay, the remainder at Half Pay The dollar is reckoned ar 3/- while the Master is on leave
PENSION At the age of 55, or after ten years' service, if the Medical Board certify retirement necessary on account of mental or physical disability, the Master can retire on pension at the following rate, one-sixtieth of salary for every year's service Full Fay, with five- sixtieths added for Foreign Service; prchanée in countries with a gold qurrency being reckoned at 3/- to the dollar.
WIDOWS AND ORPHANS FUND: 4% of the salary is by Ordinance deducted as a contribution to the support of this fund.
COST OF LIVING Food and clothing are not dear in Hongkong as compared with England, though they have risen in price during the last ten years. House Rent is very high, but bachelors can lodge with private families or form Messes with friends, when the cost of living should be moderate.
PRIVATE PUPILS. Assistant Mastors may, with the consent of the Govern- ing Body, take private pupils. There is a fairly steady demand for tutors in Hongkong amongst Germans and the families of Naval and Milit- ary Officers, also in connexion with the Oxford Local Exams. PROMOTION to the Second Grade when opportunity may offer, will be con- sidered on the personal merits of the Masters in the First Grade.
